Born 1987 in Berlin, Germany. Lives and works in Berlin.
Paul Hutchinson studied at University of the Arts Berlin and Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design, London. In his photographic practice he explores his immediate surroundings, the role of technology and contemporary Hip Hop culture. In his photographic work, Paul Hutchinson turns his gaze to the phenomena of urban life and to contemporary youth culture.
His images fluctuate between documentary representation and poetic-artistic aesthetics.
Hutchinson captures intimate moments without the images appearing voyeuristic; his models, who he primarily stages from a rear or profile view, seem both vulnerable and self-confident.
The seemingly random subjects are in fact very carefully composed and reference issues of class structure and social mobility. The photographer is also interested in urban situations, and teases out a special charm from building facades, spray-painted concrete walls, torn up streets and trash through unusual perspectives.
Amongst others, Paul Hutchinson has been awarded grants and prizes from Deutsche Bank, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and University of the Arts Berlin. He is the recipient of the Eberhard Roters Grant for Young Art 2016, awarded biannually by Stiftung Preussische Seehandlung in cooperation with Berlinische Galerie. He was recently awarded a working grant from Ilse-Augustin Foundation in 2017. After living abroad in New York, London and Rio de Janeiro he now lives and works again in his hometown, Berlin. Apart from his own practice he works as an assistant to Wolfgang Tillmans.
