Animals can be deceived by illusions, but they loose all interest as soon as they realize that the simulation isn’t real. The situation is different with humans, who can enjoy the illusion, even more than the real object. Laura Schawelka (*1988) utilizes this paradox of images in her artistic work, which includes photography, video and installation. She thereby examines modes of representation and display, and how they seduce and produce value.
Laura Schawelka studied with Prof. Tobias Rehberger at Städelschule in Frankfurt, graduating in 2013, before moving to Los Angeles where she received her MFA at the California Institute of the Arts in 2015 as a recipient of a one-year Fulbright Scholarship for Graduates. Most recently she was an artist in residence at the Cité internationale des arts Paris with the Hessische Kulturstiftung. She lives and works in Berlin.
Her recent solo exhibitions include Goethe Institute, Paris; fiebach, minninger, Cologne; FILIALE, Frankfurt; and Garden, Los Angeles. Her work has been exhibited at the Kasseler Kunstverein, Kassel; Gussglashalle, Berlin; MMK Museum of Modern Art, UCLA New Wight Gallery, Los Angeles; TheTip, Frankfurt; Part I, Köln; VACANCY, Los Angeles; Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden and MAK Museum für Angewandte Kunst, Frankfurt amongst others. In the fall she will open a solo exhibition at the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum Ludwigshafen, which will include an extensive publication.
